What After High School? The Journey of a Student

Once you exit the doors of high school, you will come across many roads and journeys waiting for you. If you are the type of person that plans for the future, you will probably have an idea about which road and journey you are going to take. But, if you are someone like me who has no clue about the life that you want to live and the person you want to be, then this decision will be extremely hard for you.

You will be confused, suggestions will flow in from your family and friends about the road they think is meant for you, you will probably seek help from google or you will get influenced from the movie you saw, an article you read or a person that is close to you. There will be a lot of questions running through your head;

  • What if this road is not meant for me?
  • Will I be able to walk down this road?
  • Will this road really take me to the place I want to go in the future?
  • What will my family and friends think about my decision? Will they support it?  And so on.

After choosing your journey you will probably ponder for weeks if it is actually right for you or not. If it was the right one then you don’t need to worry but if it was not then you might have to suffer some extremely cruel and hard years.

Well talking about myself, I am currently suffering through those cruel and hard years. Why I walked down this road? Well the answer I am still searching, but the closest one is my family wanted me to do this. For me, this journey that I have decided to take is extremely hard and tiresome, every day makes me think if I could just go back in time and do it all from the beginning. But I cannot argue that this road and journey that I did not want to take has taught me some of the most important lessons in life.

What studying something you do not love teaches you:

How important it is to have a plan?

Well if you try to figure out everything at once when high school ends, you will probably end up making a wrong choice. It is important to at least have an idea about what you want to do in life. Try to figure out the things that makes you happy while you are still in school. Talk about your dream with the people who inspire you. If you are still not sure, try a variety of things and choose from them while you still have time.

“Don’t let others to decide, choose yourself”

Yes, it is important to involve and let your family know about the choice you are going to make. Listen to them, analyze the alternatives and try to convince them if necessary. But do not let others even your parents make that decision for you because it might be their decision but you are the one who has to live with it.

Another reason why you should make your own decisions is, even if your decision ends up wrong you will still have inner satisfaction because it was the choice you made. If the decision that others took for you ends up wrong, you will probably spend the rest of your life blaming them instead of trying to correct it.

Have alternatives

There are times when circumstances forbid you from taking the decision you want. It is necessary to have a few alternatives waiting for you. It is not always necessary that the things you are good at are the things you would want to do for the rest of your life. Lay out all your alternatives, analyze them carefully, and choose the best one.

It’s okay to go back and start a new journey

There are times when you realize your choice was not meant for you at the middle of the road. It’s okay to go back and start a new journey on a different path. Yes, it will probably take you a lot of time to reach your destination but you will be happy.

It’s not necessary that every journey should be completed, some can just be an important lesson or advice for a bigger one.

Our lives are the outcomes of the choices that we make. It’s not always necessary that our choices are right for us. But every choice has an important lesson attached to it. Learn from them so that the next time you can choose a better one.
